A large pure breed originating from South America and the name is taken from the Chilean Arauca Indians who were known to keep this breed although little is known of its history and only after the 1960s did the breed begin to appear with poultry breeders.

Appearance & Temperament

Lavendar Araucana’s – ours are affectionately known as “The Lavendar Hill Mob” seem to respond particularly well if spoken to in Spanish !! This rare breed is vigorous and hardy with a calm and placid nature. The Araucana is available with or without a tail – ours have tails. They have an upright attitude with a fairly small rounded head – where the ear-lobes are normally found, on either side of their head they have skin folds or plicae with feathers growing on them resulting in what is more commonly called “ear-tufts” (ideally slanting backwards). They have a pea comb of irregular shape.
