A new breed which emerged in the 1920s. The name comes from the small town of Barneveld in the Netherlands and is believed to be a cross from the Brahma, Langshan and Malay to increase the egg laying capability.
Eggs
The Barnevelder produces a wonderful dark brown egg with a smooth shell (approx 170 eggs a year) and as a breed were very successful until American hybrid layers came into being in the 1950s and the Barnevelders appeal fell away.
Appearance & Temperament
The calm and docile Barnevelder has a broad, deep and full body with medium head with bright red, comb, wattles and earlobes. The eyes are amber and legs are yellow. The double laced version has dark feathers with contrast edging, the breast is light brown and the wings have a very attractive brown and black lacing effect which on the hen continues into the tail. The cockerel has black tail feathers.
This breed of poultry is not recommended for a mixed flock as it can be bullied.
