The Stile Guide – August

Free Range Turkeys

The Norfolk Black Turkey enclosure is starting to take shape. A huge enclosure of 2,500 sq metres is being built with 7 foot high wire and anti fox wire below. It is just going to be a matter of days before the Turkeys will be out and free ranging. They are going to love it! Either that or just simply fly away!

Ramases

Our little bottle fed Soay Ram Lamb is going from strength to strength. Jane has kept him well fed and he has been successfully reintroduced to the flock. He still comes running up when we go in that field but we think that he is slowly learning that he is a sheep and not a human. The Soays are doing well and it will not be long now before the long Winter months will turn their mind towards mating with all the promise that that brings for Spring!

Hens

We have had a very successful programme of raising Bantam Buff Sussex Hens and these have sold well. So well in fact that we are going to put more in the incubator this month so that they will be at POL for February 2010. The Faverolles are going to get similar treatment as we produced some lovely girls this year. We have also had an extensive and exciting egg hatching programme to expand our flock of Rare Breed Hens – Welsummers, Araucanas, Rhode Island Reds Barnvelders and Vorwerks have all been hatched and should come into lay next year when the days get a bit longer.

Pheasants

Our programme of raising Pheasants for decorative purposes – to have a small flock of them wandering around the small holding – has been very successful and a hard core of about 12 have stayed with us and roam around the land. Hopefully they have become ‘Fox Wise’ and we will have little ones next year.

Organic

We are thinking of going for an Organic accreditation for our land and for our Poultry. We raise our animals in an Organic manner and we have no chemicals on the land so to all intents and purposes our produce is Organic but just cannot be called as such. We will keep you posted on this process as we go through it.

Autumn

This time of the year looks as though it will be really busy with a lot of new hens going out on range and with our Turkeys going ‘free range’ in their new pen. September looks as though it is going to be even more exciting!
