Winter continues, not too surprising really as it is February, but I really cannot remember us having such poor weather for many a year now. Hopefully we will turn the corner soon and March will reward us with good weather.
Norfolk Black Turkeys
The Turkeys continue in rude health and I am delighted to say that the awful weather really does not have any affect upon them. They just love their outside free range life style. This just goes to show that if you are looking to free range your Turkeys that you cannot do better than the Norfolk Black.
The stags are starting to sort out who will get prime mating rights but the fighting has been pretty much kept to a minimum, this is probably because they were raised together from young poults and so the heirarchy has been evolving over time.
All of our Norfolk Black Turkeys are flock mated – this means that the hens are naturally mated with the stags and no artificial insemination is carried out. We hope that March will see our first egg for the 2010 year!
Soay Sheep
The Soays are as strong as ever and seem to relish the Winter conditions. We are hopeful that all our ewes are carrying lambs but we will not find out for sure until April/May time.
Micro Pigs
One of our Micro Pigs – Pancetta – had her litter of piglets (known as the chipolatas) in January. We had 5 beautiful little piglets (all female)in loads of different colours. They are all doing well and will be fully weaned in March. All 5 piglets will be added to our breeding herd and we soon expect to have 10 Micro pig females and 1 little Boar.
The web site will soon be updated to show pictures of our pigs and we hope to be able to start selling piglets by mid year 2010. They are really very pretty and are an ideal size for people who want to have child friendly pigs.
Hatching Eggs
We have a number of Traditional Breed hens and we will be selling their eggs as Fertile Hatching eggs soon. Our web site will undergo a bit of a revamp in the coming months and full details of our wonderful Traditional Breed hens will soon be available. We saw a need in the market for people wanting to buy good quality hatching eggs from a reliable source and we hope to provide our customers top quality hatching eggs from our beautiful free range flocks. More on this next month.
