Emerging in Britain in the 18th Century and at the first poultry show in 1845. Although seven colours are available we only specialise in the “buff” variety at Overthestile both in large fowl and bantams. The Buff Sussex, a fairly heavy dual purpose bird appeared in the early 1920s.

Eggs

The girls lay around 180 eggs in a season of a good size and light brown in colour.

Appearance & Temperament

They are easy to handle and inquisitive, Mr Pickwick our cockerel is a splendid example of the breed and keeps his girls in check – a great bird for the beginner! They can become quite tame if you care to take the time with them. A well-proportioned bird with a wide flat back and broad shoulders a deep breast and tail held at 45 degrees, creates a classic and traditional look. The head has a short curved beak, good eyes and a single comb which is evenly serrated and vertical – the face, ear-lobes and wattles are red. They have a good covering of hackle feathers and featherless light coloured legs. The Buff Sussex are not keen on flying, but are a good garden bird, loving to forage.
