Originating in New England, USA and known worldwide as a dual-purpose bird. The first birds were exhibited in 1880 at a poultry show in the US but it took until 1904 for the breed standard to attain perfection and by 1909 a specialist Rhode Island Red Club was established in the UK.

Eggs

A healthy hen will produce 200 – 220 light brown eggs in a season.

Appearance & Temperament

They are a tolerant breed and a good “backyard” bird and are generally calm and docile. The Rhode Island Red being a rich reddish-brown is known for its rectangular profile enhanced by the long flat back, slightly raised tail and vertical breast. The head is held forward on a well-hackled neck and is topped with either a rose comb or a single, five-pointed serrated comb. It has bright prominent red eyes and earlobes and wattles are average. Sporting bright yellow legs like an old school golfer is a characteristic of the breed. They have four well-spaced toes on each foot.
