The Vorwerk was developed by a German poultry breeder, Oskar Vorwerk based in Hamburg in the 1900s and is believed to have been crossed with the Lakenvelder, Orpington and the Andalusian. It is a good egg and meat bird. The Rare Breed Poultry Society in the UK do protect this breed under their “rare breed” classification.

Eggs

The Vorwerk produces approx 170 cream or tinted eggs in a season.

Appearance & Temperament

The mild-mannered, alert and active Vorwerk (which also shares its name with a German vacuum cleaner) has black belted markings and a buff-coloured body and has a typical utility shape, a broad, deep body, a well-rounded and full breast and a tail held at a lowish angle. The single comb has six serrations. The eyes are redish-orange with medium-sized wattles and small, white earlobes. The upright neck is covered in full hackle feathers and the bird stands on slate grey, featherless legs with four-toed feet.
